Rain & snow fading
Cold north & east

Wednesday
Overnight rain and snow clears from central & northern areas, but a zone of wet weather lingers across eastern Britain much of the day, some wet snow over hills, fading slowly. Brightening skies for the Midlands & southern England. Showery for western areas, locally frequent rain near coasts. Strong to gale force winds near southern coasts. Light winds in north. Just 3 to 5C in east & north, 7 to 10C Midlands & south-west.

Wednesday night
Largely dry inland, with clear spells. Showers around coasts, mainly in west, giving locally frequent rain. A westerly breeze remains fresh around coasts, but winds dropping light inland. Temperatures dipping to 2 to 5C in Midlands and south, milder near coasts in south-west. Near or below freezing for northern Britain, and where skies clear, Scottish glens may drop below -6C over snow cover.

Thursday
A brisk north-westerly breeze for all. Areas of showers - locally banding together into frequent squally bursts of rain, particularly west & north-western regions, and a few clusters of showers are likely to spread into the Midlands. Rain over the North Sea will graze eastern coasts of England. Driest toward central & eastern Scotland and southern England. Cool for most, highs 6 to 9C, perhaps 11 or 12C in the far south-west.

Friday
Expect widespread frost to start the day. Any sunshine generally hazy, and cloud soon thickening from the west as fronts approach. Most places should be dry all day. Rain developing across Ireland, later spreading to western Britain, turning heavy into Friday night, particularly over the hills - risk of snow at first before milder air arrives. Light winds overall, but will freshen in west. Temperatures 6 to 9C, perhaps 12C far south-west.
