High pressure
Colder from Tuesday night

New Year's Day
A ridge of high pressure is located to the west of the British Isles bringing a mixture of variable cloud amounts, sunny spells and some mist or fog patches. The thickest cloud will be over northeastern Scotland and in a band stretching from Northern Ireland across North Wales and central England. The best of any sunny spells will be over southern Scotland, northern England and south-central England. Winds will ease through the day. High temperatures at 4 to 10C.


Tuesday Night
Variable cloud amounts overnight on Tuesday into Wednesday with the thickest cloud for western and eastern coastal regions and the Midlands. It should remain dry for most areas. A widespread ground frost is expected to develop and extensive mist or fog patches are likely. Lows for towns and cities at -1 to 4C.
 


Wednesday
Strong high pressure, exceeding 1040mb, is expected to lie across Britain and Ireland. A frosty start is expected for much of Scotland and the north of England. It will be a mostly dry day with sunshine, variable cloud and a risk of stubborn low level fog patches. Winds will be variable and light. Cooler than previous days with top temperatures ranging from 1 to 7C.
 


Thursday
A strong high pressure area is centred over southern England. The day will start cold with a widespread groundfrost for Scotland, England and Wales. It will be a dry day for all but cloudy in the north. Brighter skies are expected over the southern half of the country though some patches of fog may persist in low-lying areas. Winds will be light. High temperatures at 3 to 6C, but staying colder where fog lingers.
