Issued: 0530hrs Monday 21st January 2019
Duty forecaster: Garry Nicholson

Heavy rain and snow develops for France

Monday
Much of central Europe will be influenced by high pressure and quiet winter weather with widespread frost. Low pressure lies over the western-central Mediterranean, bringing heavy bursts of rain or hail to the islands, plus south & central Italy, with snow over hills. A few showers may affect east and northern Spain, but the west and south-west of Spain, plus Portugal, will be dry with some sun, highs 15C.
Some snow for the Balkans, but much of Greece should be dry. Patchy snow for the Romanian mountains, whilst persistent snow moves eastwards across Ukraine. Dry across France and the Alps. Gusty winds for northern Germany and Denmark, with showers around the southern Baltic. Patchy snow for central Norway and Sweden. Staying in the deep freeze for northern Scandinavia, daytime maxima -10 to -20C.

Tuesday
A cold front moves across northwestern Europe, bringing heavy rain and snow to France and northern Spain. Rain and snow too for Belgium and the Netherlands. Southern Spain and Portugal will be dry with sunshine, but feeling cool in a northwesterly breeze. Southern France, the Alps and northern Italy stay dry until later Tuesday or into the night. Germany and Denmark stay dry. Low pressure over the central Mediterranean brings heavy rain and snow to southern Italy and the Balkans, also western Greece.
High pressure over eastern Europe keeps things dry and cold for areas near the Black Sea, the Czech Republic and Poland. Daytime temperatures near or below freezing. A few snow showers around Baltic coasts and in Finland. Snow and rain for southern Norway, whilst most of Sweden stays dry. Very cold across northern Scandinavia.
