Wet Mediterranean

Issued: 0530hrs Tuesday 6th February 2018
Duty forecaster: Simon Keeling

Cold and wintry northern and western Europe, wet central Mediterranean

Tuesday
A lot of fine but cold weather is forecast to persist across more northern areas of Europe into Tuesday despite some wintry precipitation across the British Isles, parts of N France and also across much of Scandinavia, including Norway, Finland and Sweden. Some particularly low minimum temperatures may well be observed across northern areas of Europe into Tuesday.
Low pressure dominates through the central Med bringing showers, longer spells of rain and some thunderstorms to parts of Italy, while the Alps see yet further significant snowfall. Unsettled weather is expected across Spain too, but rather cold here with some snow for the mountains. Best of the weather will be across parts of Greece and surrounding countries where it will be fine with some spells of sunshine and relatively mild too.

Wednesday
Rain in northern Spain on Wednesday. Fair across southern Spain and most of Portugal with good spells of sunshine. Low pressure in the Mediterranean brings rain to Italy and the Balearics as well as Corsica and Sardinia. There will be cloud and some rain in Greece whilst Turkey should be fine with good spells of sunshine.
Showers, some wintry in northern and western France, feeling cold here too. Fair for the Low Countries but cold. Staying cold across Germany and Poland with some broken cloud and a few bright spells to come here. Some sleet and snow in Hungary and Switzerland as well as Austria.
Sunny spells and scattered wintry showers for Denmark. A few wintry showers in Denmark too whilst snow showers affect Finland. Norway will have broken cloud and some sunny spells to the south, and should be dry. More persistent sleet and snow affecting the west of Norway.
