Slow-moving downpours
Wednesday deluge east

Tuesday
Low pressure developing over the southern North Sea broadly influences the British Isles with areas of rain and heavy showers moving around slowly. Some places may see persistent rain for many hours, and by afternoon a risk of thunderstorms across southern Britain, particularly the south-east. Fewer showers in Scotland & Northern Ireland, but local bursts over the Highlands. Winds fairly light. Cool where rain persists, 15 to 20C.

Tuesday night
A front pivoting across central England & Wales brings further areas of rain. Some persistent falls in north-eastern areas. Residual thundery bursts toward the south-east. Gradually, a swathe of heavy rain is expected to fill in across much of eastern England. Largely dry in the west & north-west of Britain, also Ireland. Northerly winds strengthening as low pressure deepens over the North Sea. Lows 9 to 13C, locally below 7C Scotland.

Wednesday
Low pressure lies over the North Sea, with a slow-moving front across south-east England. Persistent and heavy rain is likely across East Anglia, the London area and central-southern counties - 30-50mm for some, giving a risk of local flooding. A few showers elsewhere, but much of west & northern Britain and also Ireland should be dry with sunny spells. A brisk and cool northerly wind, strongest on the east coast. Highs 15 to 20C.

Thursday
A ridge of high pressure builds across the country, bringing a fair day to most places with a good amount of sunshine. The south-east is likely to be rather cloudy, and the remnants of previous rain may linger early in the morning. Later in the day, cloud will thicken for north-western areas, with rain developing for Ireland and western Scotland into the night. A fresh breeze easing. Warmer than previous days, highs 18 to 22C.
